Im Fokus der Ausstellung disturbance: witch steht ‚der störende Faktor’, der an den festgefahrenen Machtverhältnissen rüttelt und der der Figur der Hexe innewohnt. Das ‚Hexische’, also ‚Anormale’, ‚Irrationale’, ‚Magische’ und ‚Verkehrte’ widerstrebt den festgefahrenen Rollenmustern und Strukturen und stellt dadurch eine Gefahr für den Status Quo der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften dar, die immer noch weiß und maskulin dominiert sind.
Die Aspekte des ‚Hexischen’, die sich in den Arbeiten der internationalen Künstler*innen von disturbance: witch entfalten, thematisieren nicht die historische Praxis von Hexen oder die Ausübung von Magie, sondern analysieren Zuschreibungen und Projektionen auf ‚Hexen‘, bzw. Frauen und queere Personen, die als Instrumente des Ausschlusses dienen. Die Arbeiten hinterfragen nicht nur den physischen, sondern auch den digitalen Raum, in dem die neuen ‚Hexenverbrennungen‘ stattfinden. Die Ausstellung oszilliert zwischen der Kritik an der bestehenden Ordnung und der Affirmation des ‚Hexischen‘ und soll zur Diskussion über das Transformationspotential der Figur der Hexe für gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen beitragen.

The focus of the exhibition disturbance: witch is the factor of ‘disturbance’, which not only rattles deeply set relations of power but is the inherent characteristic of being a witch. ‘Witchiness’, as in the ‘abnormal’, the ‘irrational’, the ‘magical’ and the ‘backward’ resists the entrenched role patterns and structures and thereby poses a threat to the status quo of contemporary societies which are still primarily white and masculine.
The aspects of witchiness that unfold in the works of the international artists of disturbance: witch do not focus on the historical practice of witchcraft or practices of magic. Instead the exhibition intends to analyse the attributions and projections of the term ‘witch’ as instruments of exclusion against women and queer persons, and examine the strategies and goals related to ‘witchhunts’ still virulent today. The works question not only the physical but also the digital realm in which these new ‘witch burnings’ take place. The exhibition oscillates between the criticism of the existing order and the affirmation of ‘witchiness’, and seeks to contribute to the discussion about the transformative potentials of the figure of the witch to social development.
